Chimney Repairs
Chimneys are crucial components of fireplaces, wood stoves, and other heating appliances, and like any other part of a home, they can experience wear and tear over time. Here are some common chimney repairs:

-
Chimney Cleaning: One of the most common chimney repairs is chimney cleaning, which involves removing creosote buildup, debris, or soot that can block the chimney and reduce airflow. Chimney cleaning should be undertaken by a professional chimney sweep to ensure that the chimney is adequately cleaned and to prevent any damage to the chimney liner.
-
Chimney Liner Repair/Replacement: Chimney liners help protect the chimney from the heat and toxic gases generated by combustion, improving safety and efficiency. Common liner repairs include fixing cracks, gaps, and degradation of the chimney lining. If the liner is severely damaged, it may require replacement. Stainless steel liners are the most common and most efficient type of replacement liner.
-
Chimney Cap/Flue Repair: Chimney caps or flue covers keep animals, debris, and moisture from entering the chimney. Gaps or holes in the cap or flue can allow water to enter the chimney, leading to rust, masonry decay, and other issues. Repairing or replacing a missing or damaged cap or flue is an essential chimney repair.
-
Tuckpointing: Tuckpointing is the process of replacing damaged or deteriorating mortar between the bricks or stones of the chimney. This brickwork supports the structure of the chimney and helps to prevent water from penetrating the chimney structure.
-
Chimney Masonry Repairs: Masonry cracks, gaps, and other damage can occur due to exposure to weather and the expansion and contraction of materials from high temperatures. Repairs may include building masonry crowns, replacing bricks, tuckpointing, and sealing the masonry with waterproofing products.
-
Damper Repair/Replacement: Dampers help regulate the airflow in the chimney, which can affect the efficiency of heating appliances. They can become stuck or damaged from exposure to heat and moisture, requiring repair or replacement.
Fireplace Chamber: The fireplace chamber is a crucial component to the safe and efficient functionality of use. Fireplaces are usually built with a natural corbeling of bricks. The main purpose of the smoke chamber is to hold fire smoke until it rises up the chimney flue. Over time the integrity of the chamber diminishes and holes in mortar joints and bricks causes a longer residence time. When this happens the smoke will sit in the chamber for too long and will cause heavy creosote to build up. This will lead to unsafe burning conditions and smoke to come back into the home.
